Around The Town of Glen Head, NY
with Bryan McMillen, North Shore Sales Manager.
Bryan's insights into the town of Glen Head, NY.
Why is the area so special? |
Glen Head is special because it truly has something for everyone. Like the water? Tappen Beach is fabulous with a sandy beach, terrific swimming for all ages, a great restaurant, Marina and a boat launch – and the fishing is great all around Hempstead Harbor and just outside in the Sound. Are you a foodie? #wegotthis! Gemelli’s is a great prepared food establishment, Heirloom Tavern has traditional food, La Spezia is a very popular Italian eatery, Choppers is a great burger spot, Kiraku has fresh and tasty Sushi and the Greenvale Diner has been a steady presence for decades – and all that is just the tip of the iceberg. In Glen Head there are so many opportunities for kids to be outside - Glen Head has great athletic fields and programs for children of all ages. Though Glen Head has a small town rural feel with farm stands, farm land and really nice tree-lined neighborhoods, we are close to major thorough fares and it’s easy to get east, west or south. Importantly, the North Shore School District is very highly regarded and helps knit the community together. |
What are your favorite spots in the area? |
I have a variety of favorite spots starting with the active waterfront over at Tappen Beach; I’m a boater so I favor the waters here; great for tubing, waterskiing, fishing – the works. Drive out of Hempstead Harbor just a few minutes and you’ll see the skyline of Manhattan! The beach is sandy, which is sometimes hard to find on the north shore and offers GREAT sunsets. If you’re into fishing, check out Duffy’s on Glen Head road for everything you need. Each summer there is a fair down at the beach as well – thrill rides, contests, the works – lots of fun. Glen Head and its environs were once horse country so the last vestiges of that are among my favorites; I don’t ride but the atmosphere the farms and barns create is very warm and creates a great sense of “home and hearth”; everyone always talks about how their tension fades away when they turn down Hegeman’s Lane along the farm lands. Youngs farm, Rottkamps and the adjacent Sea Cliff Market are all immensely popular and appealing not just in their appearance but in their offerings! Culturally, the Nassau County Museum of Art has exceptional exhibits often featuring local artists and the Tilles Center over at LIU attracts Broadway level acts and talent – and saves a trip to NYC! |
Where are people coming from who buy in this area? |
Most recently over half of our new residents have come from the 5 boroughs of NYC – primarily Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. They are attracted by the cleanliness, affordability, access to the city, the school district and the general attractiveness and layout of the various neighborhoods. The walkability of Glen Head appeals to city dwellers; the number of parks and the lifestyle those parks allow is very attractive as well. Others that buy in our area come from other sections of Nassau County; many move up from the south shore; others move into the area because of the school district – lots of good reasons to live in the 11545! |
